The exhibition "Crusades: Myth and Realities" demonstrates the interactions among the cultures of Europe, Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, covering eight centuries of history and myths: from the 1st Crusade, the end of the 11th century, when the first crusaders started from Europe to conquer the East, until the 18th century, when Napoleon conquered Malta and expelled the last members of the Order of the Knights of St John, which was founded in Jerusalem during the Crusades.
The exhibition is developed into six thematic units, attempting to cover the history and the legacy of the crusades:

  • Religion and shaping of mentalities
  • The Order of the Knights of St John
  • The military aspects of the Crusades
  • Symbols of authority
  • Commerce, economy and urban life
  • Muslim presence in the West

The objects that cover these six thematic units come from more than twenty museums and collections from Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta. Among others, they are presented images, wall paintings, vessels, coins, armors and costumes etc, mainly aiming at providing the public with the opportunity to learn about this significant and complex period of the Crusades. The multimedia interactive exhibit, which is presented at the area of the exhibition, contributes in demonstrating the general historical framework.
